Exchange rate determination in a transition economy The main approaches of exchange rate determination are considered in this paper. The method of research includes analysing the explanatory power of different exchange rate models. Forms and methods of exchange rate adjustment in Russia (1992 - 2000) are analyzed in the paper. Conclusions about the possibility of using appropriate exchange rate policy instruments for various monetary regimes are expected.

Should we let foreigners in? The case of Russian exporters This project conducts an empirical investigation to identify the effect of spillovers from export activity of enterprises with foreign participation (fully owned and joint ventures) on the export potential of domestic firms. Panel data analysis will be implemented, based on a five year data set ( from 1993 till 1997 ) comprising more than 40000 Russian industrial enterprises.

Macroeconomic factors determining capital flight from Russia The aim this project is detecting macroeconomic factors causing the scale of Russian capital outflows in 1994-2000, and a statistical estimation of the impact of these factors. Flight capital is modeled as a portfolio choice, restricted by the private sector total wealth. This portfolio choice is based on comparing after tax risk-adjusted return on investments in Russia and abroad.

Bankruptcy and liquidity constraints This paper is devoted to an economic analysis of institutional trap, as a result of the implementation of bankruptcy procedures in an economy with liquidity constraint. The relationship between firm liquidation value, manager's incentives, risk, probability of bankruptcy, and profit is revealed.

A principal - agent model with many agents, observable actions and costly verification: a strong Nash equilibrium implementation A game-theoretic model is constructed which describes the interactions between delinquents and a punishing authority when the level of law violation is a continuous parameter. Natural solution concepts are discussed, and equlibria are analyzed. The results obtained will be used in determining the optimal deterrence strategy in a number of special cases.

Private interest in public tenders: no revenue, no efficiency, and no social benefits The project aims at studying, from both theoretical and empirical perspective, public tenders that impose additional conditions to be satisfied by the winner. This study provides a framework for understanding allocative and revenue efficieny of many auctions and tenders taking place in Russia during transition.

Fiscal federalism: a public finance model with political consensus The subject of this project is the analysis of the influence of fiscal decentralization on regional public finance. We hypothesize that under fiscal decentralization the size of the government (the size of budget expenditure net of rent to politicians) will be higher in conditions of political consensus.

Causes and consequences of dollarization in Russia This project aims to (1) explain the forces that lead to dollarization in Russia, (2) analyze the cost and benefits of dollarization, (3) design a policy aimed at reducing dollarization, and (4) predict the consequences of making dollarization official.
